Random Google-ly Thoughts

Sometimes geeky Google Analytics perplexes me.

No surprise that the Barrowman pages are the most popular on my website. (I keep telling my boss that if he wants to increase the page hits to the company website, to just let me sprinkle the name John Barrowman liberally here and there throughout the site, and the number of site visitors will skyrocket, LOL). Didn’t start my website with the idea that it would become 80% Barrowman related, but discovered him in Torchwood at the same time I started playing with Joomla as a CMS, so essentially learned how to design webpages in Joomla by making and breaking and fixing all those Barrowman pages.

But can’t figure out exactly how 21 people [edit: 56 people! since I first posted this] so far today found their way to the JB media pages on the site from FACEBOOK. I do have an account there, but rarely use it for anything, almost never post, only signed up for it so that nobody else would swipe my user name when they changed over to real name screen names.

Certainly haven’t been posting my JB site updates there, at least not that I know of. So it’s a bit of a mystery. A lot of the other referrals make perfect sense: Twitter, Brizzly, LiveJournal… I tend to make mention of my site updates to those three fairly regularly. But Facebook is like the forgotten skeleton in my internet closet, just never think to post regular updates there.

So again, it’s a puzzlement.

Do LIKE Google Analytics, though. Gives me a general idea of who is visiting what page, how they found it (keyword searches are particularly amusing sometimes; someone recently found their way to my blog by doing a search for “dudley douchebag”, a reference from Desperate Housewives),  how many times they visit, how long they stay, and from what location. The location info in particular is of interest, love seeing how many people from other countries come and visit.

And well, it must be said that I DO find it rather *squee*-rific when I find a visitor to the Barrowman pages coming from a location where I know the man himself is at the time. The realist in me knows it could be and most likely IS anyone else, but yes, my inner fangirl did do a mental happy dance when I got hits from Glasgow and Manchester while JB was there shooting Tonight’s The Night, or more recently, hits from towns in Spain during the three weeks he was vacationing there, particularly when I’ve never gotten hits from Spain before. Was it JB? Prolly not. But if it makes the inner fangirl happy to think so, who am I to burst her bubble? 😀

Of course on the flip side, if the Powers That Be DO visit the site, there’s always that concern that I’ll get some sort of cease and desist notification from them, since I AM going a bit rogue by capturing and streaming UK video to worldwide audiences. But I look at it this way, it’s a win/win for everyone. Non UK fans get to see video they’d never get to see otherwise, and it’s promoting the heck out of the BBC, ITV, JB, etc. Essentially free advertising for them. And it’s not like I’m making any money off of it or even attempting to. So one would hope that I’m not ruffling any feathers with my site content. :)

One quick @Team_Barrowman post…

… then it’s off to bed with me (although I just rediscovered the coffee that I’d poured, um, several hours ago, that I’d forgotten all about, so just chugalugged it. I’ll prolly be awake for hours now. LOL)

I think I HAVE officially reached “Nerdvana”. I spend all day at work slamming my head against my desk trying to get some video player code to cooperate for the office website, and then what do I do when I get home? Spend several MORE hours working on a variation on the same player to use on the home website. It was an audio only player, so fell into place a little easier, and I really like the way it turned out.

I thought since I’m still getting all these blank stares from people when I mention how great John Barrowman is (I guess they missed his first 2.5 minutes of onscreen time on Desperate Housewives Sunday night, LOL), thought I’d share a little of why I think he’s so great over on the website, so set up an audio player with several tracks from each of his CDs that I’ve got, a few of my favorite tunes from each. So I spent the evening putting that together after Survivor was over tonight (yes, Survivor was tonight; if you were looking to watch it in its usual time slot tomorrow night, too bad so sad, you missed it! 😉 ).

Anyhoo, the new player is on the page here; check it out to see who this guy is who I thought was so great that he actually managed to kick U2 out of the Prius mp3 deck for the first time in over a year! (All the same tunes are also in the player at the left, but the one here isn’t nearly as slick as the one over on the website.)

My apologies to the mods on the official JB newsgroup. I’m still a little rusty on newsgroup etiquette (it’s been years since I signed up for one, probably not since my days when I was was using GEnie, my first online service from years ago), so naturally, I keep doing things that make them give my posts the boot (and I understand why, entirely my bad, I just keep forgetting it’s not a regular forum. 😉 ).

But since I’m not an official JB anything, I’ll repost here what I put there. Not as many JB folks will see it here, but maybe the extra Twitter/Facebook exposure might be helpful. :)

For those who missed it, or are in the UK and haven’t been able to see JB’s debut on Desperate Housewives on Sunday, it IS posted on YouTube, all 2 minutes and 40 something seconds of it. I personally like my own edit of it, but haven’t had time to set it up in a player on the website yet, so this will have to do for now. Sorry it’s hanging over the edge of the page a bit, but none of the video is missing, so I’ll leave it for now…

And the other thing that got the boot from the newsgroup is that I personally thought it would be a kick to see if JB’s gazillion fans got together and tried to get John on the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson while he was still here in the US, if for no other reason than to listen to John lapse back into his Scottish accent after speaking with CraigyFerg. I could listen to John speak with that Scottish brogue for, well, forever. Sounds great, don’t understand why Scott isn’t in to it. 😉

Apparently that coffee has kicked in, I seem to be typing a million miles a minute here. 😀 But anyhoo, if anyone wants to email Craig Ferguson to suggest getting JB on the show while he’s still in the US shooting DH, the email address over at CBS is

http://www.cbs.com/late_night/late_late_show/about/email_craig.php

Or for you Tweeters out there, he’s @CraigyFerg on Twitter.

Okay, the clock just bingbonged 1am. I probably should call it a night. So tweet or email ole CraigyFerg, check out the new mp3 player on the website, and heck, feel free to leave a comment! I’ve only had one so far and that was from my sister, so it was probably just a pity comment, lol.

I can't get no…satisfaction…

… out of Philips Electronics.  >:(

Got a response back from my request for technical support from Philips (see my previous post on the subject here, if you missed it.) Essentially, what they came back with was “here, check this link on our website, if that doesn’t solve your problem, since it’s out of warranty, take it to a service center.”

I just about blew a gasket.

My response? A fairly civil (?)

“The unit does NOT need service. Or to be repaired. It is not broken.

We just need to be told whether we can or cannot change the frequency
between the remote control and the unit so that units from outside the house
do not change our channels, and if it can be done – like we’ve been able to
do per the operation manuals of other brands of recorder – how to do it,
since the manual does not say.

And if it CAN’T be done, what happens when you have two Philips units in the
same entertainment unit, how do you tell keep the remote for the second unit
from unwantedly controlling the first unit?

I would think that someone at Philips could tell me at least that much.

Thank you.”

If they should once again recommend a service center, I will thank them profusely for their “help”, and advise them that the entire email exchange WILL end up being tweeted, and facebooked, and blogged, and since I bought the unit at Amazon, I’d be sure to share how “helpful” Philips “customer service” was in the product revue section over on Amazon.com as well.

Any place else online that you can think of that I might could share something like that?

Won’t do anything to fix the problem, but I’ll sure feel better about it afterwards.  Mwahaha!

(And yes, Julie, if you’re reading this, Philips customer service did a GREAT job of putting me into  “I’m Noko Marie, don’t mess with ME!” mode! 😀 )
