Random Google-ly Thoughts

Sometimes geeky Google Analytics perplexes me.

No surprise that the Barrowman pages are the most popular on my website. (I keep telling my boss that if he wants to increase the page hits to the company website, to just let me sprinkle the name John Barrowman liberally here and there throughout the site, and the number of site visitors will skyrocket, LOL). Didn’t start my website with the idea that it would become 80% Barrowman related, but discovered him in Torchwood at the same time I started playing with Joomla as a CMS, so essentially learned how to design webpages in Joomla by making and breaking and fixing all those Barrowman pages.

But can’t figure out exactly how 21 people [edit: 56 people! since I first posted this] so far today found their way to the JB media pages on the site from FACEBOOK. I do have an account there, but rarely use it for anything, almost never post, only signed up for it so that nobody else would swipe my user name when they changed over to real name screen names.

Certainly haven’t been posting my JB site updates there, at least not that I know of. So it’s a bit of a mystery. A lot of the other referrals make perfect sense: Twitter, Brizzly, LiveJournal… I tend to make mention of my site updates to those three fairly regularly. But Facebook is like the forgotten skeleton in my internet closet, just never think to post regular updates there.

So again, it’s a puzzlement.

Do LIKE Google Analytics, though. Gives me a general idea of who is visiting what page, how they found it (keyword searches are particularly amusing sometimes; someone recently found their way to my blog by doing a search for “dudley douchebag”, a reference from Desperate Housewives),  how many times they visit, how long they stay, and from what location. The location info in particular is of interest, love seeing how many people from other countries come and visit.

And well, it must be said that I DO find it rather *squee*-rific when I find a visitor to the Barrowman pages coming from a location where I know the man himself is at the time. The realist in me knows it could be and most likely IS anyone else, but yes, my inner fangirl did do a mental happy dance when I got hits from Glasgow and Manchester while JB was there shooting Tonight’s The Night, or more recently, hits from towns in Spain during the three weeks he was vacationing there, particularly when I’ve never gotten hits from Spain before. Was it JB? Prolly not. But if it makes the inner fangirl happy to think so, who am I to burst her bubble? 😀

Of course on the flip side, if the Powers That Be DO visit the site, there’s always that concern that I’ll get some sort of cease and desist notification from them, since I AM going a bit rogue by capturing and streaming UK video to worldwide audiences. But I look at it this way, it’s a win/win for everyone. Non UK fans get to see video they’d never get to see otherwise, and it’s promoting the heck out of the BBC, ITV, JB, etc. Essentially free advertising for them. And it’s not like I’m making any money off of it or even attempting to. So one would hope that I’m not ruffling any feathers with my site content. :)

John Barrowman Desperate Housewives 2 new videos

Took a little while but I consolidated all five of JB’s Desperate Housewives clips and turned them into a single half hour video stream which I put on the front page of the JB section of my site, down towards the bottom of the page.

Also working on a full screen DVD version of the same, but in the meantime, here’s the link to the streaming version of the simple photo montage I put together to use as the menu background of the dvd. You’ll find this one right near the top of the page.

Enjoy!

Of Bluebirds, Tivo, & John Barrowman

Noticed that I wasn’t getting a whole lot of hits on the blog recently, and it occurred to me that maybe it was because I hadn’t posted anything new since April 28th or so. 😀 So a few updates to some prior posts to remedy that. You can do a search on some of the main terms to see the original posts on each one.

THE BLUEBIRD EGGS:

Bluebird Eggs And then there WEREN’T five. Apparently those five bluebird eggs were defective. Last weekend we checked the nest, which was supposed to have hatched by then, and there were only four eggs left in the nest, and none had hatched yet. We were told to wait another week or so, and then if they hadn’t hatched by then, to get rid of them and the nest, clean out the box, and let the bluebirds start over. Took a peek today. ALL the eggs were gone, and Ma and Pa bluebird had already started building a NEW nest over the top of the old one. So apparently they figured out that the eggs weren’t going to hatch, cleaned house all by themselves, and are starting over again. So we may still have baby birdies to watch yet. Yay.

THE WHOLE TIVO SITUATION:

Aaaaand, it’s OUT OF HERE! The wireless N adapter that I bought at Amazon arrived Friday afternoon, so I figured I’d take a couple of hours on Sunday to get the Tivo up and running. HAH! After banging my head against a wall with the thing for FIVE hours on Sunday, 3 of which involved another online chat on the laptop with their tech support folks (you know you’re in a bad spot when even the guy at Tivo technical support is at a loss as to why the adapter – which connected to the network just fine, but refused to connect to the Tivo box – refused to connect), I said enough of this crappydoodle stuff, and we decided to ditch the Tivo and just call Time Warner to have them set us up with digital cable and one of their cable box/DVR combos.

As much as I hate getting beaten by anything electronic, which almost never happens, I’m not all that heartbroken about getting beaten by a dinky little Tivo adapter. Didn’t want Tivo in the first place, and between coughing up $300 for the box, another $100 for the adapter, and $100+ for a years worth of service, I’m more than happy to send everything back, get my $500 back, and let Time Warner, who we’ve been happy with 99% of the time handle our DVR needs for a while.

So packaged up the wireless adapter and printed out the postage paid return label from Amazon, that will go back out in the mail tomorrow. Boxed up all the Tivo cables and connectors and will be bringing THAT back to Best Buy tomorrow. And called Tivo proper last night, and got the $120+ credited back and the account canceled (Had to laugh, when he pulled up my account to see my tech support info, he’s all “You’ve got 12 PAGES of chat here from yesterday!” And I’m all “Tell me about it!”). DID find out something of interest though, assuming the customer support guy wasn’t just feeding me a line. Apparently Best Buy was selling first generation Tivo boxes, and with most first generation things, there are bugs. And the wireless N adapters are pretty new (the only two local sellers selling Tivo wireless adapters were Best Buy and CompUSA, and both were still only selling G, not N). And apparently, one of the bugs in the first gen boxes is that they don’t tend to like those newfangled wireless N adapters. So had I bought a Tivo box from someone else, I probably wouldn’t have had a problem. And for my trouble, since I was taking the Tivo box back to Best Buy anyway, Tivo would sell me a box direct, for $100 off the price. I told them thank you but no thanks, I already had the appointment for Tuesday with the cable company.

Which I did. When I called THEM Monday at lunch, they were actually able to schedule an installation for between 5-7pm tonight. The guy came before 5:30, and was done in less than an hour. And now we’ve got a DVR that will record two different channels at once, and more channels than we know what to do with (I’ve FINALLY got BBC America! Yay! And while I’m not ready to jump into watching the new Doctor Who quite yet – never seen a Dr. Who ep in my LIFE – they actually had a Doctor Who Primer episode on at 10am tonight, which will hopefully give me an idea of whether I want to waste time trying to get up to speed on the show or not.) Alas, we’ve already had a scheduling conflict with having the new channels now. Already had both DVR tuners and my RAM disc recorder programmed for the main three networks tonight at 10pm, what’s a girl to DO? Why, pull up Doctor Who in the onscreen programming guide and see if the episode is going to be airing again at a later time. Why yes, yes it is! 1am tonight. Selected it from the list, hit record, and whambam, it’s programmed. Just that easy. Tivo WHO? 😀

I will say though, in comparison to the customer “support” that I received from Philips when I contacted THEM for help, despite the fact that the whole Tivo thing didn’t work out, the Tivo customer support was actually pretty impressive, IMHO. So they get some points for that.

JOHN BARROWMAN:

Just a webpage update, if you Barrowfans haven’t found it yet without a blogpost to point the way. 😉 After not being included in the Desperate Housewives episode LAST week (which was a good thing, since locally, the whole first half of the show was pre-empted due to tornado activity in our viewing area), JB’s 3rd episode aired Sunday night, so I finally added his 2nd and 3rd DH episode clips to the site.

The clips can be found here, as usual. Enjoy, all you Johnettes and Barrowboys! 😉

Danny: “Heeey, double cappuccino, extra hot. Need anything else?”
Patrick: “Inspiration.”
Danny: “Sorry, we just have muffins…” 😀

Patrick: “…I’ve had an exhausting couple of days, what with searching your house looking for firearms, and running over Dudley Douche-bag…”

One quick @Team_Barrowman post…

… then it’s off to bed with me (although I just rediscovered the coffee that I’d poured, um, several hours ago, that I’d forgotten all about, so just chugalugged it. I’ll prolly be awake for hours now. LOL)

I think I HAVE officially reached “Nerdvana”. I spend all day at work slamming my head against my desk trying to get some video player code to cooperate for the office website, and then what do I do when I get home? Spend several MORE hours working on a variation on the same player to use on the home website. It was an audio only player, so fell into place a little easier, and I really like the way it turned out.

I thought since I’m still getting all these blank stares from people when I mention how great John Barrowman is (I guess they missed his first 2.5 minutes of onscreen time on Desperate Housewives Sunday night, LOL), thought I’d share a little of why I think he’s so great over on the website, so set up an audio player with several tracks from each of his CDs that I’ve got, a few of my favorite tunes from each. So I spent the evening putting that together after Survivor was over tonight (yes, Survivor was tonight; if you were looking to watch it in its usual time slot tomorrow night, too bad so sad, you missed it! 😉 ).

Anyhoo, the new player is on the page here; check it out to see who this guy is who I thought was so great that he actually managed to kick U2 out of the Prius mp3 deck for the first time in over a year! (All the same tunes are also in the player at the left, but the one here isn’t nearly as slick as the one over on the website.)

My apologies to the mods on the official JB newsgroup. I’m still a little rusty on newsgroup etiquette (it’s been years since I signed up for one, probably not since my days when I was was using GEnie, my first online service from years ago), so naturally, I keep doing things that make them give my posts the boot (and I understand why, entirely my bad, I just keep forgetting it’s not a regular forum. 😉 ).

But since I’m not an official JB anything, I’ll repost here what I put there. Not as many JB folks will see it here, but maybe the extra Twitter/Facebook exposure might be helpful. :)

For those who missed it, or are in the UK and haven’t been able to see JB’s debut on Desperate Housewives on Sunday, it IS posted on YouTube, all 2 minutes and 40 something seconds of it. I personally like my own edit of it, but haven’t had time to set it up in a player on the website yet, so this will have to do for now. Sorry it’s hanging over the edge of the page a bit, but none of the video is missing, so I’ll leave it for now…

And the other thing that got the boot from the newsgroup is that I personally thought it would be a kick to see if JB’s gazillion fans got together and tried to get John on the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson while he was still here in the US, if for no other reason than to listen to John lapse back into his Scottish accent after speaking with CraigyFerg. I could listen to John speak with that Scottish brogue for, well, forever. Sounds great, don’t understand why Scott isn’t in to it. 😉

Apparently that coffee has kicked in, I seem to be typing a million miles a minute here. 😀 But anyhoo, if anyone wants to email Craig Ferguson to suggest getting JB on the show while he’s still in the US shooting DH, the email address over at CBS is

http://www.cbs.com/late_night/late_late_show/about/email_craig.php

Or for you Tweeters out there, he’s @CraigyFerg on Twitter.

Okay, the clock just bingbonged 1am. I probably should call it a night. So tweet or email ole CraigyFerg, check out the new mp3 player on the website, and heck, feel free to leave a comment! I’ve only had one so far and that was from my sister, so it was probably just a pity comment, lol.

John Barrowman Desperate Housewives Season Finale Video

FINALLY! The season finale of Desperate Housewives, and John Barrowman’s last episode. I thought he was fantastic in it, playing bad guy Patrick Logan, but Gaaah! Really REALLY dislike that show. So needless to say, very happy to NOT be needing to record it each week anymore.

Won’t say much more than that about the show, except to say *sob* Oh, that poor Prius. Hope they used a stunt Prius for the scene. LOL

Coming up on 2AM, so I’m going to post this, go outside, hug MY Happy Hybrid, and then go to bed. 😀

The new video for the last episode is on the usual Multimedia page here.

JB_DH_EP5

Yeah, so it's another @Team_Barrowman post. Oh well. :D

Disclaimer: if you’ve not been watching Desperate Housewives the last several weeks, you may find yourself a bit lost in this post. And if you’re still waiting to watch it, some serious show spoilage ahead, so you may want to stop here. All have been warned (and why do I find myself wanting to add “NONE shall pass!” after that? LOL)

Anyhoo, read on, or not. :)

***********

Well, I either got really creative or really stupid the other night. Not sure which yet, you tell ME! 😉

After reading much discussion about the fact that John doesn’t bring roses, but his alter ego on Desperate Housewives, Patrick Logan, does, I apparently got kicked in the head by my muse in the wee hours of the morning earlier this week (kind of like tonight, actually, it’s almost as late tonight as it was earlier this week), and I wrote a parody (something I like to do on occasion if the spirit moves me) of “I Won’t Send Roses”, as if it was done by Patrick, in his own unique ie rather warped fashion.

Some of the lyrics are a smidge iffy, even to me; other parts, to borrow a phrase from John, are just “brilliant”, IMHO. 😉 But he’s got a couple more episodes to go, so there time for improvement, should I get dope-slapped in the head by the aforementioned muse again.

I called it simply “I Will Send Roses”, lol. Here’s a sample from the second verse:

Forget escaping
I’ve got the key
Locked to the bedpost
And spooned we’ll be.
And should I kill you you would be
The first to know
Then I’ll send roses,
‘Cause roses suit you so…

Check out the full page on the website here. It’s got the whole song (such as it is), photos, and the mp3 to play so you can sing along should you so choose.
